What to Do in Westchester: June 30 – July 1

Celebrate summer with fresh eggs, a classic summer carnival and Beethoven al Fresco.

June 28, 2012

We are very proud of (and work so darn hard on) our events calendar so every Thursday we highlight a few things happening this weekend that we think are extra special. This weekend, June 30 to July 1, is all about Fish Tales, collecting fresh eggs, a summer carnival and Beethoven’s Sonatas Al Fresco. Intrigued? You should be.

Have your kids ever collected their own eggs? Mine haven’t either, unless you count picking up the carton at Trader Joe’s. At Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, every Saturday and Sunday, kids (age 2-14) can help the farm hands with farm activities including collecting eggs. Children must be accompanied by an adult and must wear closed toe shoes. Egg collecting times this weekend are: Saturday at 11 to 11:45 or 12 to 12:45 and Sunday at 11 to 11:45 and 12 to 12:45. Advanced tickets are required; these programs sell out fast! Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, 630 Bedford Road, Pocantico Hills; 914-366-6200

This Saturday, you and your kids can learn about art and science at Fish Tales Around Westchester. This ongoing art exhibit showcases 20 pieces inspired by Westchester’s waterways. The street level shows us man’s interaction with the Hudson River and the second floor is focused on the aquatic life of Long Island Sound. Find out more about the artists that collaborated on this exhibit here. Also, mark your calendars for next Saturday, July 7 from 1 to 3pm, when the exhibition’s curator La Benida Hui, will host an art-making workshop for kids ages 5 and up.

Fish Tales Around Westchester runs until Saturday, August 11, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm; 914-428-4220. ArtsWestchester: 31 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains (Photo courtesy of ArtsWestchester)

The 65th Annual Village of Mamoroneck Fire Department Carnival started this Wednesday and runs all weekend at one of my favorite parks: Harbor Island Park. Expect all the classic carnival fun with rides, food, games and raffles. I can’t think of a better place to enjoy a carnival with a view of Mamaroneck Harbor. This Sunday, July 1, relax to the sounds of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Violin and Piano at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the beautiful Mediterranean-style villa in Katonah. Every Sunday in July (and one in August) is Caramoor’s “Al Fresco Sundays,” an opportunity to listen to music outdoors in the fresh air. Tickets are $10 and you can purchase them on their website. Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, 149 Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah; General Information: 914.232.5035, Ticket Information: 914.232.1252
