A friend told me about a new app that her friend developed called La La Lunchbox and I’m hooked. Being an app novice (and a lunch packing novice) I was intimidated by the whole idea of planning my daughter’s lunches on my iPhone, but La La Lunchbox is so simple it’s genius. Plus, it’s cute. Even more important, it’s easy enough for kids to get involved with picking out their lunches. Here’s how it works:
First, enter your child’s name and let your child choose their monster. There’s an orange monster with one eye, a pink monster with buck teeth, a smiley purple monster and a few more that are equally quirky and adorable. Then, choose the week you want to plan.
Next, pick food from four food groups: proteins, fruits, veggies and snacks. I showed my daughter the choices for each group and we were both surprised at all the ones we hadn’t thought of. I was shocked when she chose hard boiled eggs as her protein. (Never would have seen that one coming!) You can also add to the list of foods that come with the app.
With each food choice, you drag the food into the monster’s mouth. Yum!
When you’re done planning your week, select the groceries icon. There you will see the list of groceries you chose for each child’s lunch. Check off the items on the list and they’ll appear in your grocery basket. Now you have your list for shopping!
This is the first summer I’ve had to pack my daughter’s lunch and I’m embarrassed to admit that she went to camp with the same lunch for the first two weeks. Next week she’ll have lunches so varied, I might make the same for myself. I think I should be the purple monster.

Aha, I shouldn’t be giving my kids the same thing everyday! OK, I forgot this simple fact. Thank you monsters…we’re on it!
