What to Do in Westchester Labor Day 2012

A guide to local happenings in and around the county.

September 1, 2012

In town this holiday weekend? Consider yourself lucky. Say goodbye to summer with one of these sunny day ideas.

Head to Katonah for a Labor Day Antiques Fair at Lasdon Park from 10am to 5pm on Monday, September 3. See the wares of several dozen antiques dealers selling everything from vintage costume jewelry to fine Persian rugs and pillows. There’s also a plant sale and live music. Another big draw: Lasdon Park itself. The 234 acre park is definitely worth a stroll. There are lovely hedged gardens, fountains and trails meandering through, making this park perfect for restless children — and adults. Admission is $7 for adults; free for children under 13. Lasdon Park and Arboretum, 2610 Amawalk Road, Katonah; 914-273-4667, cordshows.com

Lunch With a View
Harvest on Hudson, a riverfront restaurant with a sprawling outdoor patio overflowing with gardens, will be open for a special Labor Day Jazz Lunch on Sunday, September 2 from 11:45am to 2:30pm. John Romgnoli Trio will be performing, and Harvest’s lunch menu will be served. Harvest on Hudson: 1 River Street, Hastings; 914-478-2800

A Gorgeous Garden
If you haven’t been to Wave Hill public garden, this may be the weekend to go. The stunning public garden sits atop a high cliff overlooking the Hudson River with city and mountain views. But go to walk the gardens: The aquatic gardens are particularly fun for little ones since they can hunt for koi, but you may enjoy walking through the conservatory lush with tropical plants and ferns. On Labor Day Monday at 2pm, Wave Hill is offering a Labor Day Garden Highlights Tour. Meet at the Perkins Visitor Center for an hour-long tour of late summer’s beautiful bounty. Wave Hill, 675 West 252nd Street, Bronx.

Get Your Swim On
Head to the pool! This is the last weekend that many (if not all) of Westchester’s public pools will be open. If you haven’t gone through the splash zone at Tibbet’s Brook pool in Yonkers or slid down the slide into the cool water at Saxon Woods Pool, this is your chance! See our guide to local pools for more information. Don’t forget: Harbor Island’s Sprinkler Park closes Monday too!

Or make it a beach day. We love sneaking off to Greenwich, Connecticut to squeeze in a little last minute beach time. Here’s an insider guide to swimming at the Long Island Sound. Or, if you’re in a Hudson state of mind, go north (or south!) to Croton Point Park for a little swim at a sandy river beach.
