When you’re not in the mood to go to a supermarket and there aren’t any farmers markets open, head to Apple Farm in White Plains. With an unbelievable selection of produce and more seafood than I’ve ever seen in one place, this market is a great score.
Apple Farm carries some hard to find fruits and vegetables but it’s mostly known for the quality of the produce. If you like trying something new, I spied cactus pears and fresh Italian prunes. I also saw cranberry beans, both peeled and unpeeled, three kinds of eggplant, plus one of my favorite veggies that gets a bad wrap — okra.
The guys at the seafood counter know their fish and are happy to give advice on preparations. On any given day you’ll find red snapper, yellow tail, striped bass, Spanish mackerel, Chilean sea bass, halibut, grouper, sardines, gray sole and more. Plus, oysters, steamers, three sizes of shrimp and some pretty large fish heads. (If you like that sort of thing.)
You won’t find everything you can get at a supermarket and you’ll pay more for certain grocery items like TP and canned goods, but you can get a lot on your shopping list like milk, cheese and deli meat. Apple Farm also carries about five varieties of fresh sausage, fresh pasta and fresh mozzarella and there’s an impressive cheese section. But the real reason to visit Apple Farm is for the variety and quality of the produce.
Apple Farm accepts cash only, but they have an ATM machine in the store. Another downside is the store can get very busy and the aisles are narrow. My three-year-old refused to stay in our cart and I was afraid she would get run over by another cart. Some nearby stores of interest include Loehmann’s next door and Westchester Wine Warehouse is in the same shopping center.
Most importantly, I brought home some grey sole that was just as good as the fish from Eastchester Fish and the white peaches were the best peaches I’ve had all summer. Considering that summer is almost over, let’s savor every bite.
Apple Farm: 37 Tarrytown Road, White Plains; (914) 288-9521. Open Monday -Fri, 8am – 8pm; Sat, 8am – 8pm; Sun, 8:30am – 8pm.

I love Apple Farm! Haven’t been there since we moved up, but I remember going with my mom when I was growing up around here! Thanks for reminding me of this great place!
