Fall Festivals 2012 in Westchester County

Mark your calendars. It's time to celebrate fall.

There are so many fall harvest festivals in Westchester County, NY this autumn, you may have to attend more than one. Some are apple festivals, some celebrate fall foliage, while others are just an excuse to drink hot apple cider, carve a pumpkin and enjoy the crisp outdoors.

Here’s a month by month guide to fall festivals in the region:

September

Fieldhome’s Fall Festival
Date: September 22 from 11am to 4pm
Where: Field Home, 2276 Catherine Street, Cortlandt Manor
What to Expect: It’s free admission to the festival that features a pumpkin patch, a classic car show, fall plant sale, lots of food as well as an entire Kid Zone. Here, kids can play on inflatable rides, pet animals, decorate a pumpkin and have their face painted.
Tickets: Free admission and parking

Fall Harvest Festival at Green Chimneys
Date: September 30 from 10:30am to 4pm
Where: Green Chimneys School, 400 Doansburg Road, Brewster
What to Expect: Start the day with a Children’s Harvest Fun Run around the horse barn. Then try your hand at the Pumpkin Roll, pumpkin decorating or take a hay ride or run through a hay maze. There’s a bungee trampoline, pony rides, wildlife demonstrations and arts and & crafts tables.  If you come, don’t forget to the visit the Farm & Wildlife Center, home to nearly 300 animals including unreleasable wildlife (eagles, hawks, owls), horses, camels, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas and more.
Tickets:  $5 for adults; kids 12 and under are free

October

Harvest Fest @ Stone Barns
Date: October 6 from 10am to 3pm
Where: Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, 630 Bedford Road, Pocantico Hills
What to Expect: Join in this community celebration of the farm at its most fruitful. Festivities for the whole family include live music, a farmer’s market with delicious seasonal fare, hayrides, farm demonstrations and amazing adult and family workshops with farmers and food experts.
Tickets: $40 for adults, $20 for kids between 2 and 14

Warwick Apple Festival
Date: October 14 from 10am to 5pm
Where: downtown Warwick, NY (about an hour north of White Plains)
What to Expect: Every year, Warwick opens its streets up for a large all-day apple festival. There’s serious shopping — over 200 craft vendors set up — and dozens of food vendors to keep hungry bellies full. There’s seven different stages featuring music and entertainment. Plus, an all day carnival with a special kiddie carnival. Best of all: An apple pie baking contest with samples for festival goers.

Sheldrake Environmental Center’s Fall Festival
Date: October 14 from 1pm to 3pm
Where: Sheldrake Environmental Center, 685 Weaver Street, Larchmont
What to Expect: Come to Sheldrake to paint a pumpkin. Then stay to visit the live animals, listen to music and get your face painted. Lots of arts and crafts to keep little ones busy.
Tickets:  Free

Autumn Celebration @ Muscoot Farm
Date: October 14 from 12pm to 3pm
Where: Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers 
What to Expect: Spend the day listening and dancing to a band, watching blacksmithing demonstrations, making origami, visiting antique cars, decorating a sugar pumpkin, taking a hayride or shopping at the Farmer’s Market.
Tickets: Free, but a small charge for sugaring pumpkins

Pumpkins and Hayride Festival at Teatown Lake Reservation
Date: October 27 from 11am to 1pm OR 2pm to 4pm
Where: Teatown Lake Reservation, 1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining
What to Expect: Teatown cancelled their annual fall festival this year to control costs, but they’ve added an equally appealing event. You can decorate a pumpkin (kids use veggie scraps to make their faces), relax on a hayride beneath a beautiful fall canopy.
Tickets: $30 per family (2 pumpkins); Programs fill quickly so registration is strongly recommended. Call

Greenburgh Harvest Festival
Date: October 21 from 11am to 4pm
Where: Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road, Scarsdale
What to Expect:  Cider making, scarecrow-building and pumpkin-carving. There will also be a petting zoo, scavenger hunts, tractor rides, zip line and live music.
Tickets: $8 per person if purchased in advance, $10 day of the show

Scarecrows and Pumpkins Parade
Date: October 28 from 11am to 3:30pm
Where: Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road, Scarsdale
What to Expect: Young children can follow friendly scarecrows along the center’s pumpkin trail. Kids are encouraged to come in costume. Enjoy cider, treats and tattoos.
Tickets: $7 if purchased in advance, $9 day of the show

November

Weinberg Nature Center’s Annual Fall Festival
When: November 4 from 1pm to 3pm
Where: Weinberg Nature Center, 455 Mamaroneck Road, Scarsdale
What to Expect: Those that live in lower Westchester will appreciate the quick hop to Scarsdale for a fun fall day. Live animals, a petting zoo, apple cidering, nature walks, scavenger hunts, a haystack dive, games food and much more!
Tickets: $7 per person; kids under 2 are free. Includes refreshments.

Turkey Scavenger Hunt
Date: November 11 at 1:30pm
Where: Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road, Scarsdale
What to Expect: Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to a traditional “turkey token” hunt along a nature trail. After the hunt, all “gobblers” enjoy snacks and nature crafts.
Tickets: $8 day of the event
