Melt Sandwich Shop in White Plains

Melted goodness with fresh, homemade ingredients and always made to order.

As we drove to Melt Sandwich Shop my daughter and I listed all the food that tastes delicious melted. We decided that almost everything tastes better at least a little melted, even ice cream. Melt’s sandwiches were full of yummy, gooey, melted goodness.

Here’s how you order a sandwich at Melt: choose the roll – short, long or flat, choose from one of their smoked or grilled meats like aged beef top round, corned beef, slow roasted turkey, BBQ pulled pork, (to name a few) and pick one of the combos of perfectly mixed extras that transform your sandwich into more than an ordinary sandwich. I was temped by “the Cuban” with pickles, Swiss cheese and spicy Dijon mustard, excited by “the spicy” with green chili, red onions, white cheddar and thrilled by “the french onion” with sauteed onions, Gruyere cheese and au jus.

I stood at the counter, my mouth watering, knowing I wanted the pulled pork but I had no idea how to pair it. I asked the guy at the counter and he recommended the flat bread and “the mango” with mango salsa, jalapenos, cilantro and red onions. For my girls, I asked for a grilled cheese sandwich and he recommended the grilled cheese on flat bread.

My sandwich was delicious and I tasted mango and cilantro in every bite. It was a little on the greasy side, so I think a different bread might be better to soak up the juices. My daughter’s grilled cheese was huge and crazy good. The mozzarella and cheddar mix was overflowing. Cutting it was a challenge with a plastic knife and fork, but I figured it out.

I ran into a friend at Melt who raved about the Cobb Salad. That’s when I realized that Melt had a larger menu than I realized. I was so focused on the tempting selection of meat that I didn’t notice the salads and grilled pizza. The baby spinach salad has apples, figs, candied walnuts, mango, red onion and a sesame ginger vinaigrette. Or how about a portobello mushroom pizza with caramelized onions and crumbled blue cheese? The prices are very reasonable especially considering the quality of the food. Sandwiches range from $6.50 – $8.50, pizza is $9 and salads range from $4 – $10.

The restaurant is small with about five tables inside and five umbrella tables outside in nice weather. Before my friend walked in with her 2 year old, we were among professionals on their lunch break. But, given the five star grilled cheese sandwich, Melt is definitely kid friendly. Melt doesn’t have a bathroom, but there’s a nail salon next door that was obliging to us.

Melt’s owners, Bill and Kristin, are residents of White Plains, who are living their dream. They opened Melt because they love food, especially sandwiches. They cure, brine, roast and smoke all the meat in house and make all the sauces from natural ingredients. Absolutely nothing is packaged. They claim to not even own a freezer.
