It’s Ragamuffin Parade weekend, so don’t miss our guide to the local festivities! Here are some other cool happenings around town.
A Purr-fect Play
Lowly Worm! I grew up reading Richard Scarry’s books about Huckle and Sally Cat, and now my 2-year-old goes bananas for these lovable characters. See them all this Sunday, October 21 when the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck presents a children’s play: “Lowly Worm & Huckle Cat: Busytown Busy.” There are two performances, one at 11am and the other at 1:30pm. In the show, Busytown is hosting a talent contest and Huckle, Sally, Lowly and Sergeant Murphy are abuzz with excitement. Your little one will be just as excited. For ages 2+. Tickets are $18 for adults; $13 for kids and can be purchased at Emelin Theater’s online box office. 153 Library Lane, Mamaroneck; 914-698-0098
Westchester’s Biggest Pumpkins
It’s Giant Pumpkin Weekend at the New York Botanical Garden. Visit the garden on Saturday and Sunday to watch Master Carver Ray Villafane from the Food Network and his team transform these colossal pumpkins, some of the largest in the world. Expect incredible displays of zombies, ghosts, goblins and more.
You’ll find the gargantuan pumpkins at the Clay Family Picnic Pavillions (right near the children’s adventure garden). On Saturday, October 20 from 1 to 5pm, you can also bring older children to the adventure garden for the Budding Masters Pumpkin Carving Workshop for Kids. Kids ages 8 to 15 will work as part of a team to carve a ginormous pumpkin. Toddlers will squeal just seeing the mere size of the pumpkins. Watch a video of last year’s event above. New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx.
Let Their Imagination Soar
Do you have an aspiring Superman? Get your pint-size action figure ready. There’s a Super Hero Cape Craft Workshop at Pottery Barn Kids at The Westchester Mall on Sunday, October 21 at 12pm and 1pm. Kids can customize their cape and head home with a new prop for imaginative play. It costs $10 to take part and reservations are required. (Note: On Saturday, October 20, Captain America will make an appearance at the store to sign autographs and take pics with Marvel Comics fans.) The Westchester, 125 Westchester Avenue, White Plains.
Make Your Own Apple Cider
Westmoreland Sanctuary is a wonderland when it comes to hiking. Many of the trails are easy for children to explore on. Take a trip to Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco on Sunday, October 21 at 1pm for a Cider-Making event! All ages are encouraged to attend. Expect a hands-on demonstration of old fashioned cider-making with their hand-powered cider press. Everyone gets a taste. If interested, RSVP by Friday, October 19. Westmoreland Sanctuary, 260 Chestnut Ridge Road, Mount Kisco; 914-668-8448 . If you go, definitely head to downtown Mount Kisco to the new Lassi Bar and Little Kebab Station that we recently wrote about!
