Westchester’s kids love arts and crafts. And we love art studios that let us walk-in and create a masterpiece! The following art studios will let you do just that. A few places recommend a phone call or reservation, but most have times that you can just show up and be creative. So, dress your kids in old clothes (you might want to do the same) and pick your passion, from painting pottery to tie dying, you and your kids can get crafty!
Many of the following art studios also offer classes, camps and birthday parties. I have only provided information on when you can walk-in and play, without enrolling in a class.
A Maze in Pottery, Inc. in Briarcliff Manor welcomes walk-ins without a registration (unless you’re a party of 5 or more) during their regular business hours of Tuesday and Wednesday 10am – 6pm, Thursday and Friday 10am – 8 pm, Saturday 10am – 6pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm (closed on Mondays.) Pay the cost of the pottery you choose (piggy banks, mugs, garden plaques, pitchers, plates and more) plus a studio fee of $8 for the first hour and $4 for each additional hour. Paints are all non-toxic, lead free and food safe. Pottery prices are $5 -$80. There is no studio fee on Tuesdays for kids (ages 4 and under) from 11am – 3pm. Fun Craft in Scarsdale (and Darien) loves walk-ins! Come on in and choose from over 500 plaster craft pieces. Think: butterflies, soccer balls, ballerinas, trains, rainbows and more. You can also make sand art and sand pictures. Open 7 days a week from 10am – 6pm. (Painting must be done by 5:30pm.) Stay for as long you want without paying for a studio fee. On Wednesdays, paint one plaster craft and get the second half price. They recommend that you call ahead for availability. At Groovy on Grand you can walk-in and create your own fashion: silk screen, tie dye, studded or vinyl graphic, paint, sew, dye-sub print or draw a design on an iPad and they will print it on a t-shirt or accessory. Drop-in: Thursdays and Fridays after school, all day on Saturdays and school holidays. Prices depend on the item you are making and range from $22 – $38 per item. Lakeshore Learning offers free crafts every Saturday from 11am – 3pm. Check their schedule to find out about the upcoming crafts. Lakeshore: 969A Central Park Avenue, Scarsdale; 914-472-1820
You’ve got to love a place with a slogan like “where we think outside the splot”! Orange Splot Art Spot has pop-in art classes on Mondays 9:30am -10:30am (for ages 0-6) and 4pm – 5pm (for ages 5 and up) with no registration required. (This is not a drop-off class.) Cost: $20 per child or $100 for 6 classes. Also, their Family Fun Labs occur every 2nd and 3rd Saturday of every month from 12pm – 2pm. Enjoy a new art challenge at every lab and create something exciting with the whole family. Cost is $15 for each child. Check out their Kids Only Art Events, too, that are drop-off. At Paint Your Art Out, you might bring home the perfect birthday present for a grandparent like the above clock. Pay for the ceramic piece you choose plus a firing and glazing fee that ranges from $4 – $10. There are no studio fees, so paint at your leisure. Choose a decorative plate, silly monster, flower box, tea pot, mugs and more. Paint Your Own Pottery loves walk-ins and has a relaxing, fun atmosphere to create. Open Mondays – Saturdays 11am – 7pm and Sundays 12pm – 5pm. Young at Art offers Family Sunday Workshops designed for the family to create art together and have a blast. Workshops include painting, mobile construction and puppet, stage and show projects. Family Fun Workshops are on the following Sundays from 3pm – 4:30 pm: February 10, March 10, April 14. (Please check their website for more dates.) For ages 2 and up. $15 per person. Love Love Love Orange Splot Art Spot!! She is wonderful at what she does and my son has a great time with all the different activities
There’s also Children’s Creative Corner in Larchmont, where you choose an item to paint/decorate, do an additional craft (e.g., beading) while the paint dries, have a snack (juice and goldfish, e.g.)–all for $15. They do birthday parties too.
