What To Do This Weekend in Westchester: February 16 to 17

See what's under the Big Top!

February 14, 2013

It’s going to be frigid this weekend, so how about making a plan for the great indoors? We’ve got just the place for you.

The locally-loved Hanneford Family Circus will perform for the 38th time at the Westchester County Center this Saturday, February 16 through Monday, February 18 at 10am, 2pm and 6pm. Expect tigers, motorcycles, high flying beauties, elephants, and a special guest named “Grandma.” Purchase tickets at the Westchester County Center box office or call Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or go to Ticketmaster’s websiteTicket prices: Adults & Children (2 yrs. & over) $29.50 or $23.50. Westchester County Center: 198 Central Avenue, White Plains; 914-995-4050

Whenever I need to escape the winter doldrums, I head to the New York Botanical Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory for a walk. The large sprawling greenhouse is as elegant as the Louvre, but it’s filled with warmth and tropical reminders of warm days to come. This winter, the conservatory is hosting “Tropical Paradise,” a showcase of orange-yellow crotons, fuchsia bromeliads, and rosy-red hibiscus daily from 10am to 6pm. You can view a collection of tropical photographs from far-flung locales around the world, then head to the indoor Everett Children’s Adventure Garden’s Discovery Center so kids can take a closer look at the differences between tropical and temperate plants. They’re also invited to take bark rubbings, count tree rings and head into the winter garden with a field notebook to discover the vital sparks of life that lie just below the surface of this quiet season. New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx.

Attract lovely little bluebirds to your backyard! Children ages 6 and up are invited to construct a Bluebird House at Westmoreland Sanctuary this Sunday, February 17 from 1pm to 2pm. Kids and parents will create their very own wooden bluebird house to provide a nesting location for the birds in their backyard. Don’t bring a thing — materials to make the birdhouses are provided. $8 per person. Please RSVP by February 15. Westmoreland Sanctuary, 260 Chestnut Ridge Road, Mount Kisco; 914-668-8448

The Emelin Theater’s production of Angelina Ballernia is sold out. Boo! But there’s another reason to head to Mamaroneck this weekend, especially if you can finagle a last-minute babysitter: Chocolations is hosting a Sweetheart Afternoon Tea between noon and 3:30pm this Saturday, February 16. Think: light lunch, chocolate scones, chocolate chai. A decadent treat for a cold Sunday afternoon.  $35 for one; $50 per couple. Chocolations, 607 East Boston Poast Road, Mamaroneck. Make reservations by calling 914-777-3600 or 914-738-2100.
