Trendspotting: Chic Summer Shorts

Shorts aren't just for days at the park any more....

May 17, 2013

Tailored shorts are all the rage this spring. Ranging in fabrics from leather to embellished silk to lace, shorts have been revolutionized and are now totally appropriate for date nights out.  The key to getting it right is the length — not too short but not too long — to show off the right amount of leg.  Add to that the golden rule of balance.  When wearing this season’s mid-thigh shorts, don’t go skimpy on top too. Paired with a tank and blazer, linen sweater or my go-to, a denim shirt, shorts can be a chic, sophisticated look with flats or wedges.

Here are a few of my top pics this spring. These are not your mama’s shorts…

Sponsored Post: The YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester presents their “Little Friends” Camp

The perfect Westchester Community summer program for your child

May 1, 2013

A pioneer for social change through innovative programs that improve the lives of women, children and families, The YWCA of White Plains & Central Westchester’s Summer Camp Programs adheres to their 85-year old mission. Their goal is to create the perfect setting in which children can experience the best of summer camp:  develop lasting friendships and memories, increase self esteem by meeting fun new challenges, and learn and play in a nurturing, individualized, safe environment.

In the YWCA’s Little Friends camp, your child’s days will include structured activities that expand their horizons and abilities. Directed by a highly-qualified, early childhood educated & trained staff, there is time allotted for free play, independent exploration and making friends. The air conditioned classrooms along with their fenced in playground equipped with sprinklers provide a fun and refreshing environment. Weekly themes, arts and crafts, soccer, special events and instructional swim are all part of their wonderful camp experience.

Introduced last year, the Creative Adventures Group for 5-6 year olds, offers educational enrichment opportunities, while incorporating good old-fashioned summer-time fun. Children will explore an array of subjects including science, literacy, math and their community. In addition, they will enjoy swimming three times a week with Red Cross Certified instructors, arts and crafts, music, playground time, special events and so much more!

The Starfish Program is back again this year for children turning 3 years old by December 31, 2013.  With a low camper-to-staff ratio, this program for the younger set includes hours of fun with Musical Munchkins, nature exploration, arts & crafts, and more special events. Of course, their days wouldn’t be complete without sprinkler and water play every day, weather permitting.

Children can bring their own lunch but a snack is included in the camp fee, which runs for 4 weeks.  Kicking off June 24th and running through August 9th, the camp day runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm, with extended care options available.

For fee information and to find out more about the YWCA of White Plains & Central Westchester’s summer programs, please visit their website at http://www.ywcawhiteplains.com/html/summer_camps.html and/or send an email to membership@ywcawpcw.org.

Sponsored Post: How Do I Know If My Child Needs Physical Therapy?

Pediatric Physical Therapist, Wendy Kaplan-Lager, PT, shares developmental signs to look for and what's next

April 26, 2013

As a parent, at one point or another, you may have noticed something in your child that’s made you wonder if their physical development is normal and on-track. Does your newborn’s head tilt to one side? Is your baby’s crawling or walking delayed? As a first-time parent or not, if your concern deepens, the idea of what to do and where to go for help is daunting.  Naturally, your first step is to call your pediatrician with questions. In many cases, the issue may resolve itself over time, but together with your pediatrician, you may want to consider visiting a Physical Therapist for a consultation.

Wendy Kaplan-Lager, PT, a White Plains-based Physical Therapist with over 33 years of experience, shares that ”the goal of physical therapy is to prevent or correct physical dysfunction when working with gross motor and/or movement disorders in children.” In her practice, Wendy and her associates evaluate and treat infants and children, from preemies to teens, with a warm and welcoming demeanor. Her personalized care is what her clients love most about her, and she approaches each child with an individualized plan.

Wendy explains that a child that falls below normal physical developmental standards should be seen by a Physical Therapist (with a prescription from your pediatrician). Below, she provides the conditions for parents and caregivers to look for when considering their child’s need for treatment:

Your child may need Physical Therapy if you notice any of the conditions below:

1) Torticollis: In infants, head is tilted to one side due to tightness of the neck muscle

2) Delays in gross motor development: Rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, walking

3) Asymmetrical body use: child favors use of one leg/arm/etc. over the other

4) Abnormal or poor posture

5) Limited or excessive joint mobility

6) Floppiness or stiffness in muscle tone

7) Difficulty with balance and coordination

8) Excessive clumsiness

9) Awkward jumping or running patterns

10) Toe walking

11) Genetic disorders

12) Walking difficulties

If you’re concerned about your child’s physical development, your first step is to talk to your pediatrician who will issue a prescription for Physical Therapy. Next, the Physical Therapist will determine the best course of action moving forward, such as how long they anticipate your child may need treatment and what you can do to help the process outside of your visits. In Wendy’s practice, the Physical Therapists are an important part of the health care team, working closely with physicians and other health care professionals on an on-going basis for the benefit of the child.

According to Wendy, once in treatment, the success of any therapy depends on the person or people who spend the most time with the child, mainly the parents or caregivers. The Physical Therapists can help you adapt your home to meet your child’s special needs, and provide exercises and activities to do with your child at home and how to incorporate them into their daily routine. The more educated and confident the family members are with the therapy techniques and exercises, the faster the results for the child! After all, the Physical Therapist’s main goal is to help the child achieve his or her maximum independence attainable for home, school or social activities.

Wendy understands the evaluation process may be stressful and worrisome for some parents, and she is happy to alleviate those worries and concerns at the initial evaluation for your child.

Look What’s Springing Into the Produce Aisle

Local Nutritonist, Jessica Fishman Levinson, gives us the scoop on what's fresh and available now

April 24, 2013

Tired of butternut squash, parsnips, and brussels sprouts? Don’t despair – spring produce is slowly popping up in local supermarkets. Although you may have seen some of these fruits and veggies in the supermarket over the winter, they haven’t been coming from local farms. They’re often picked before fully ripened and they’ve been in transit for a while.

Eating what’s in season is ideal – It’s when produce is the most nutritious and flavorful. Plus, when it arrives from local farms, you’re supporting hard-working farmers and helping the environment. Most Westchester farmers markets aren’t in full swing yet, but we can’t wait for them to open. In the meantime, look for some of these nutritious and delicious spring produce favorites in your supermarket and get cooking.
