This New York tradition gets better every year!
The NY Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show is unlike any other train show in the world. Located in the Botanical Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a Victorian glasshouse, the show is set amongst lush tropical plants and flowers. The exhibit itself is created from natural materials like bark, twigs, stems, fruits, seeds and pine cones. With 140 scaled iconic buildings like Penn Station, Yankee Stadium, Radio City Music Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island and more, everyone loves to point out their favorite landmarks.
Steam engines and street cars from the late 1800’s, modern freight and high speed passenger trains and trolleys, and Thomas the Tank Engine run over a quarter-mile of train tracks. Kids and adults are mesmerized by trains zipping across bridges, through tunnels, past waterfalls and creeks. Don’t be surprised if you see a butterfly or ladybug trying to hop a train in this tropical wonderland. [...]
Halloween inspired fun that's just right for the youngest tots.
The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at the New York Botanical Garden is just haunted enough to be fun for the preschool set. In true NY Botanical Garden fashion, the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden is decorated with whimsical carved pumpkin sculptures of bugs, flowers, mushrooms, bats and other Halloween animals.
There’s a ton of ways to play on your own and there are some scheduled events on the weekends, too. We loved the playhouse covered in pumpkins, a pumpkin puppet theater complete with puppets for kids to create their own puppet shows and we never get tired of making the water in the fountain squirt by jumping on the ground.
Think of these outings as the perfect before or after lunch activity.
