April 5, 2013

The Children’s Garden Center Preschool at Temple Beth Abraham, a program of the JCC in lovely Tarrytown, is now enrolling for their 2′s, 3′s and 4′s classes next fall. Known for their warm and nurturing program, The Children’s Garden Center Preschool’s mission is to promote social, cognitive and emotional development through an emergent curriculum with child-centered classes, encouraging children to thrive through hands-on experience, experimentation and creative expression.

This month, they’re launching an exciting Preschool Prep program for “Almost Two’s”…

The Children’s Garden Center Preschool “Spring into the Two’s” program is a fun-filled Mommy & Me class for “almost two-year olds” and a caregiver.  In this intro to preschool, children will get a taste of the fun ahead while they engage in music, baking, planting, art, story time, snack time and movement.  Running for 5 Tuesdays starting on April 16th-May 14th from 10am-11:15am, Spring into the Two’s will provide you both with a morning of fun — and nothing to clean-up!  The 5-week session costs $100, but sign up by April 10th for a $20 discount (that’s 5 classes for $80!).

With flexible scheduling options including early drop-off and late pick-up, the staff at The Children’s Garden Center Preschool makes everyone feel welcome.  For the Preschool program, there are both morning (9am-12pm) and afternoon (12pm-3pm) slots available plus afternoon electives with a different area of interest for each day of the week, including science, karate and cooking.

Fresh Juice + Inspiration at Believe Tarrytown

There's a healthy dose of good vibes at Believe Juice and Books.

March 2, 2013

Believe Juice and Books only opened a few days ago, but I can already see how much Westchester has been missing this kind of “eat for energy” juice spot. Walk in and you’re greeted with shelves of inspirational titles: books about women who dared to hike solo or travel to far-flung parts of the world, books about recovery, others about explorers who summited the world’s tallest peaks.

And we haven’t even gotten to the juice bar, which offers a dozen healthy concoctions to boost your immune system. I order the “Everest,” a delish mix of kale, celery, parsley, cucumber, lemon and apple.  [...]

Shop Local: Pure Mountain Olive Oil

Sample and take home artisanal olive oils at this Tarrytown food shop.

January 28, 2013

They had me at the samples. At Pure Mountain Olive Oil, shoppers are encouraged to grab a few tasting cups and pump different flavor olive oils into each one. There’s cubes of bread for dipping, and as Wolf, the nice shopkeeper behind the cashier told us, all that’s left to do is get tasting.

Pure Mountain Olive Oil isn’t just a gourmet food shop — it’s a gourmet food experience. (Plus, it’s good for your health. Olive oil is said to make you live longer, since it wards off cancers, contains powerful antioxidants, and improves heart health.)

The walls are lined with stainless steel canisters holding over a dozen olive oils. The Oregano Olive Oil tasted like it would zest up a simple tomato sauce; the Chipotle Olive Oil had a slight kick. The Scallion Olive Oil would make a fabulous homemade salad dressing, while the Basil Olive Oil would taste delish over veggies. I flipped for the Garlic Olive Oil, which tastes like fresh garlic was just mashed into the oil. (I bought a bottle for $17.95 a few weeks ago, and it’s already half empty.) [...]

Where to Volunteer in Westchester

Tarrytown's Volunteer Center of United Way helps you help others.

October 24, 2012

Sometimes life gets so busy that giving back to the wonderful community we live in (unfortunately) takes a back seat.  We often feel the tug to volunteer around the holidays, but if your local school or religious organization doesn’t have a turn-key opportunity lined up, you may be stumped as to where to start.

Problem solved: The Volunteer Center of United Way, which serves Westchester and the Mid-Hudson Valley, makes volunteering easy by pairing individuals and their interests and services with meaningful organizations in our area that need help.

The Volunteer Center Wee Westchester

The process for getting started is simple: You create a “Log In” account with a profile (basics like name, address, phone number, etc.) on The Volunteer Center’s website.  It’s completely confidential and you have the option of including more specifics like your personal interests, background, etc. You can then view service opportunities. Press the “Express Interest” button when a job appeals to you and an email will go directly to the volunteer coordinator of that agency; there’s room for comments such as times available, details about skills, or perhaps that the interest is being expressed by a parent for their teenager (you have to be 14 or over to set up your own Log In account).  Then, the volunteer coordinator knows that you are interested and will reach out to discuss it, by email or phone. Inside Westchester’s American Dream Home

Decorating ideas from Westchester Magazine's new designer show house.

October 22, 2012

The first thing I notice when I step inside Westchester Magazine‘s American Dream Home are the mums. Not the yellow or orange varieties in pots on stoops for fall, but hand-painted chrysanthemums on the bright blue entryway wall. The designs pop with pretty without being too girly, and I run my finger over the petals while thinking about where I might paint some in my house.

There are lots of surprises — and inspiring design ideas — at the American Dream Home. It was decorated by local designer Susan Anthony of Anthony-Olanow Design Group. Located at Hudson Harbor, a new development of carriage house-style townhomes that are more similar in style to federal Georgetown than city brownstones, the Dream Home impresses with its homey (and sophisticated) decor, smart bathrooms and gorgeous paint colors. Built on 24 formerly polluted acres on the Hudson River, the carriage houses at Hudson Harbor are between 2,200 and 2,700 square feet and run between $1.2 million to $2.5 million. [...]

Crabtree’s Kittlehouse Opening Rivermarket Bar & Kitchen

The Chappaqua bastion of fine dining is going casual in Tarrytown.

October 21, 2012

Westchester Magazine’s American Dreamhome had its ribbon cutting last Thursday, and we went for a sneak peek at the designer digs. More on this, including lots of pics of the inspiring space, tomorrow. First, I wanted to share some really exciting news. Crabtree’s Kittlehouse, a white tablecloth institution of fine dining located in a mansion in Chappaqua, is opening a second, more casual eatery in Tarrytown. Rivermarket Bar & Kitchen will be part gourmet market featuring the best local foods the Hudson Valley has to offer and part wine bar. Best of all, it will offer fresh, farm-to-table prepared food, including made-to-order, wood-fired pizzas. [...]

Village Dog’s Artisinal Hot Dogs

This hip Tarrytown restaurant has revolutionized the hot dog.

October 3, 2012

When I saw Village Dog‘s website I couldn’t wait to try their hot dogs. These guys are very passionate about hot dogs. I like hot dogs, too, and I like other people who are excited about food. Plus, their logo is a pig dressed in a suit. They had me with their fancy pig.

Village Dog’s hot dogs, sausages, sides and condiments are made in-house and the ingredients are sourced from the finest farms and markets (their hot dog buns are from Balthazar). They use sustainably raised meat and seasonal products and believe seriously in “you are what you eat”. That’s great to know because a hot dog and healthy food don’t usually go together.

Children’s Book Day at Sunnyside

Readings + Picnic + Hudson River Views = One Great Saturday

September 12, 2012

Did you know that the author of the adorable “Biscuit” children’s book series lives in Hastings?  I didn’t either, but I’m excited to go meet Alyssa Capucilli at Children’s Book Day on Saturday, September 15 between 12 and 6pm. Capucilli will be one of 60 local children’s book authors who will make an appearance at the festival, which will feature readings, demonstrations, music and book signings.

Washington Irving’s Sunnyside (One Sunnyside Lane, Tarrytown) is an enchanting estate along the Hudson River, making it the perfect backdrop for a Saturday afternoon. (It’s where the author wrote Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.)

Have a picnic with food on hand from Irvington’s always tasty Geordane’s market — love their salads! Clifford will be giving little ones high-fives, and there will be appearances by the Big Red Dog, Bunnicula, Biscuit and Franklin the Turtle. Best of all, the hippy ladies from the 1970s children’s series “The Magic Garden” will be there. One of them — Carole Demas — lives in Irvington. Um, hilarious.

Can you guess which Westchester town has the most children’s book authors at the event?

A $500 Dream Nursery

A Tarrytown mom shows us how she created a luxe space for less.

August 19, 2012

We love hearing from local moms who have cool ideas to share with us. Recently, Nadia Fante, a mom in Tarrytown, sent us some pictures of her son Giacomo’s nursery, and we were amazed. This mom has some serious DIY design talent and the best part is she created this room having spent less than $500 (not including the crib/rocker/changing table and bed that she already had).

A licensed architect originally from Peru (she only moved to the U.S. 7 years ago), Nadia went with a yellow and grey color scheme for her son’s nursery. In search of a space that was “modern, cozy, colorful, and not too baby-ish,” she asked readers on her blog, mamemima, to vote for their favorite of 3 mood boards. She knew she was having a boy, but the color scheme would work for a boy or girl. I’m bananas for the chevron wall that she painted (and explains on her design blog, House 36.) [...]

Westchester Parks: Kingsland Point Park

August 13, 2012
Thumbnail image for Westchester Parks: Kingsland Point Park

Kingsland Point Park is one of the Rivertown’s best kept secrets. It’s tucked away behind a charming neighborhood in Sleepy Hollow, and you wouldn’t even know it was there unless you happened upon it, like I did several months ago. “Kingsland is the best park in the Rivertowns,” I overheard one mom tell another recently [...]
